The Forest of Dean which is the largest oak forest in England and was the first to be designated as a National Forest Park in 1938.  Steeped in history with it’s rich and varied landscape the area is perfect for walking, mountain biking and horse riding.  Ideal for wildlife lovers, you may even spot the deer or wild boar living in the forest.  A visit to the Dean Heritage Centre will give you an insight into the area.

 

The Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its spectacular scenery should not be missed.  Symonds Yat Rock provides the perfect viewpoint to take in the valley and offers you the chance to see the peregrine falcons which nest in the Caldwell Rocks.  May Hill also provides an excellent view of the surrounding area.

 

Why not visit Puzzlewood at Coleford with it’s network of pathways or view the splendor of Clearwell Caves with their awe inspiring chasms.  The Malvern Hills are also nearby and should not be missed.

 

The city of Gloucester  hosts a magnificent Norman cathedral  and refurbished Victorian docks providing an historic  backdrop to it’s wide range of shops, markets, eateries and visitor attractions.

 

On the outskirts of the city centre you will also find the newly opened Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet Centre which offers nearly 100 shops selling top name fashions and homeware items at discounted prices.

 

Also nearby is Cheltenham Spa, England’s most complete Regency town.  Most of the town centre lies within a conservation area of outstanding national importance.  It is known for its stylish shops and restaurants and festivals of horse racing, music and literature.

 

Recommended local pubs for good food and real ale include the Red Hart Inn in Blaisdon, the Red Lion in Westbury, the Yew Tree at Cliffords Mesne, the Glasshouse Inn at May Hill, the White Hart at Broadoak, and the Farmer’s Boy at Longhope.
